Celebrating Global Voices, Right in the Heart of the Caribbean – Grenada!

From L-R:  Teddy Frederick,  Kerri Birch, Petra Roach, Meschida Philip, Kibwe Tavares and Andre Hayes

Can you believe it’s been a month since we wrapped up the 6th Annual 12°N, 61°W Grenada Film Festival? From October 24-27, Grenada became a meeting place for global voices, celebrating the theme: “Stories Separated by Oceans, Connected Across Cultures.”

This year, the festival showcased the power of storytelling to unite us across cultures and experiences. We welcomed filmmakers visiting Grenada for the very first time, saw diaspora creators reconnecting with their roots, and cheered as local talent lit up the screen. It celebrated diverse voices from the global majority, and we’re still buzzing from the connections made and stories shared.

Bridging Generations and Inspiring the Future

One of the standout moments this year? Watching TAMCC students connect with industry leaders like Kibwe Tavares and Tiffany Yarde. It was a glimpse into the future for these young filmmakers, showing them the limitless possibilities within the film industry.

And we can’t forget the St. Andrew’s Secondary School (SASS) students at the Opening Gala, supported by the Forrester Creative Renaissance Fund. It was a proud moment to see them walk into such a dazzling event, representing Grenada’s future storytellers. These experiences cement our festival’s mission: to connect, inspire, and launch the next generation of creators.

People, Films, and First-Time Moments

With over 30 films screened this year, the 12°N, 61°W  Grenada Film Festival celebrated a vibrant array of storytelling from the global majority. Each film offered a unique perspective, taking audiences on emotional journeys that sparked laughter, tears, and applause.

The diversity of voices highlighted during the festival underscored the shared experiences that unite us, resonating across cultures and generations. Every screening enriched our understanding of the global majority’s narratives and showcased the immense power of storytelling to foster connection.

Seeing first-time visitors fall in love with Grenada’s vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes reinforced that this festival is about more than just movies. It’s a space where oceans are bridged, voices from the global majority are amplified, and meaningful connections are built—leaving a lasting impact on everyone involved.
